Rachel Reed's blog 'Midwife Thinking' has been a great source of reflection and insight for me, since I qualified as a Midwife, and I would definitely recommend it to other Midwives/Doulas/Doctors.
Rachel is an independent Homebirth Midwife in Australia, or as she calls herself 'a birth nerd!'
Her blog examines and challenges current midwifery/obstetric practise and looks at the evidence (or lack of evidence!) behind what we do and why.
Rachel's blog on Early pushing "the anterior cervical lip; how to ruin a perfectly good birth" has been particularly influential in my development as a Midwife and I would encourage EVERYONE to read it.
This under-researched topic of early pushing is such a great example of how we need to challenge our taken for granted assumptions and learned behaviour and look at the real evidence behind our attempts to 'manage' birth.
I am so grateful for blogs like this as in the current system of management of birth and denying women's own instincts it can sometimes feel like I am the only one who thinks we are unduly doubting women's bodies to birth perfectly. Blogs like this remind me that I am not alone in putting women's bodily wisdom at the centre of my care and give me strength to carry on.
Keep fighting the good fight people!
